It is not a very long hike and it is wide enough for you to move at your own pace, even when others are hiking behind you.

This was the first trail hike we did in Shenandoah National Park because it is the most popular. I highly recommend it as the falls are very pretty. It's not the highest falls I have ever seen but the hike is fun (going down) and lots of pretty smaller falls to take pictures of. We went when temperatures were cold and I'm glad because going down its a piece of cake...going back up is not easy at all. It's a fairly shirt hike mile wise but the hike up is steep so unless you are in really good shape it will not be as fun going back up and may take you a little longer. I wouldn't recommend it if you have really young children. Also a bear was spotted twice in this area, so have camera ready. :)

We loved this hike, and Dark Hollow Falls were beautiful. The distance was just enough for a good work out, and we saw a bear on the way back.

We were a young family and our eldest, 6, was the only one to manage the walk despite it being only a 1 & 1/2 mile round trip as it is downhill all the way to the waterfall and you return on the same route. The path was in good condition.

For avid hikers this trail may be a breeze but for older visitors or anyone with a handicap this will be a difficult spot to get to and get back. The falls are beautiful though. Nature enthusiasts should definitely go see it.

A short steep hike will take you to Dark Hollow Falls. There is nothing notable along the heavily treaded dusty trail until you reach the destination - the falls. The waterfall was nice but too crowded to get any good photos. One of the most popular trails in the park, but with all the wonderful trails in Shenandoah it's certainly not one of the best. That being said, it is still worth the short hike.

Too steep down a descent to get to the falls. Rocky and slippery. Only for the young and very sure footed hiker. Would not recommend this trail to anyone over 55 unless you are experienced trail hiker. View not worthy of the trouble.

A short drive up from Big Meadow campground, Dark Hallow Falls is a nice half mile round trip hike with a large parking lot just off of Skyline Drive. The path is well groomed with steps on the steeper areas. I will caution that the walk down is very easy, but the walk back up is fairly steep and easy to moderately difficult in some areas.Overall, the falls is one of the best on Skyline drive, and there are many places to get photos of it from its base. Take a camera and plan about an hour to an hour and a half.

It's about a one mile hike down to the falls but it is easily signposted and the trail simple to follow. The falls were in full flow when we got there and we enjoyed the view and relaxing down at the bottom. The hike back is all uphill so if its warm take some water, also gets busy at the trailhead parking but it's worth the effort.

The trail has its steep points, but is otherwise generally short and easy (from the Dark Hollow Falls parking - on the other side of the Big Meadows locale). The falls are beautiful once you reach the bottom. It is nice that you can get close enough to appreciate its beauty up-close. It offers good pictures especially when the sun shines through the colorful leaves around it. We took the short trail and were not disappointed.

If it's waterfalls you are interested in seeing, this is an easy hike to the base of a lovely waterfall. From the base you can take a fairly easy trail up the side of the falls for some good additional views. If your interested in some challenges in your hike consider the longer route.

it was an average hike but very hilly and beautiful, my wife and 17 year old daughter liked it and that says something! I will go again in a minute.

Dark Hollow Falls is located opposite the Big Meadows area. It has a parking lot. It was raining the day I was there. The Falls was beautiful. You should continue on past the sign to the overlook for the lower falls for the best view. You can continue further and stand over the water where the fire road crosses. It is a steep climb back. Hiking poles help a lot. It is an easy trail to follow.

We arrived at Big Meadows Lodge on October 14, 2014. Unfortunately, it poured the rain for two days. On day two, we hiked to Dark Hollow Falls which is normally low in overflow in October but the rain produced a magnificently beautiful waterfall. The color of the leaves was also amazing. Great hike and worth the walk back up.

Easy terrain. Initial walking is down hill. Hike back is all uphill. Falls are small as compared to our previous travels. Perfect for a foggy day as a vista was an not an essential part of the hike to enjoy the attraction. If wet, beware of slippery mud. Small children may need help getting back up the hill.
