You must walk between in installation wear tennis shoes There is a new installation open in 2015 down the road. We visited it while it was in the works and can't wait to go back

We took a tour of The Chinati Foundation in Marfa,TX recently. Through lucky timing we were the only ones on the tour and had our own docent. Ralph was very knowledgeable and made the tour of the several buildings on the grounds of an old cavalry fort and a downtown building come alive. He told us what we needed to know, answered questions competently and gave us time to linger and explore. This is large installation art and there is a lot to see. Allow a full day to do it.My favorites were the large aluminum squares filling two buildings and the pages of typewriter word art. The Flavin light tunnels were pretty cool, too.No pix allowed but we never would have finished if I had spent the time I need in taking pictures. Wear a hat for the outdoor portion of the tour. The key to our good experience was our great docent, Ralph.

There are indoor and outdoor installations of Donald Judd and indoor installations of Dan Flavin and other important contemporaries like Claus Oldenburg. You can see them all via guided tours at 9am and 11am. Be aware that the Foundation is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Sunday. Very bored young man at desk. Sent to look at concrete blocks! My wife appreciated. I didn't!

We went to Marfa to see the Judd works and the Chinati Foundation, which has a lot of his sculpture and other works. The site is an abandoned army fort from the early 20th century, and I would recommend the polished aluminum squares, in two buildings that were once arsenals. There is a lot of art here, including Judd's early stuff, John Chamberlain, and Dan Flavin's light art. There are also outdoor pieces, including concrete pieces by Judd and a sculpture by Oldenburg. The main problem is that you cannot take pictures, except out of doors, so that they can sell their catalog, which we bought.

I stopped by in the afternoon for a visit. The building tours had ended, and got a very definite cold shoulder from the folks in the visitors center. Only the outdoor concrete installation art was open, and the harsh afternoon light really doesn't do it justice. I hope I would have had a better experience had I gone in the morning.

I went to Marfa for the primary purpose of visiting the Chinati Foundation and seeing the Donald Judd work exhibited there. I was not disappointed. In addition to Donald Judd, art work by Dan Flavin and John Chamberlain were also on exhibit. Would I go back again, yes!

...definitely a must for anyone even vaguely curious about "minimalism". Usually there is only one temporary (year-long) installation; all the others are permanent. There is a bit of walking involved- more of an issue in the hotter months.

Self-guided walk through the untitled works in Concrete is fabulous. You really get the drama when you can walk between them, etc. Much recommended.

A main reason to visit Marfa on a road trip. Did the two hour tour which was enough. The polished aluminum boxes were interesting. Being on a former military base used to monitor the boarder and the turn of century Mexican situation was also interesting

Glad it was free this weekend... I would classify it as overrated. Normally it would be $25 per person, but this was the Open House weekend. Was ok, if you could cram several buildings, unmarked, into just a few hours.

Primarily traveled to Marfa for the galleries, cool shopping and restaurants; however, almost everything in Marfa is closed during the week. Aside from the Hotel Paisano, I was greatly disappointed in the entire town as nothing was open and/or available to experience when I visited. Unless you visit on Saturday afternoon Marfa is essentially closed for business.

We went on the two hour tour not really knowing what to expect. I wouldn't say that I am a modern art enthusiast but I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the artwork.

Taking the whole day tour is a good choice This is a good way to find out about all that Marfa offers while seeing abstract art. FYI this is probably not a good family or kid tour. Kids will have a hard time staying engaged.
