The San Elizario Mission on the Spanish Mission Trail of (far east) El Paso has a very nice Art Market. Housed in old adobe/stucco one story buildings you see shop after shop from local artists. You could easily spend a day here. You will be impressed with the local artists and the art. You can buy reasonably priced originals or very affordable prints. Chatting with them gives you more depth on the history of the area and you can also get some good tips on where to have a good meal. I bought a print from the Escamilla Art Gallery named, "The Immigrants" and he says it is a best seller from tourists, including European tourists, as it transcends all immigrants from all points to new points. I thorough enjoyed this Art Market. I would highly recommend it to locals as well as tourists. On my way back towards town, I stopped at Licon Dairy -- which first surprised me when I saw a camel and a llama! They make/sell Asadero Cheese. It was worth the stop. Then I drove across the street and stopped at San Elizario Bakery, a small, old, building. I bought some rolls that were some of the best bread I have ever tasted. It went perfectly with the cheese. This is a small family-owned bakery whose recipes have been passed down for generations. This was also a treasure find in the Mission Trail Art Market.I stopped at the next two Missions before returning to the City. I visited in January when the weather was a bit cold and the skies were gray. I'd like to return in the Spring in hopes of seeing an abundance of color in fruit stands and desert flowers. If you are looking for art to decorate your home or office, you should definitely stop at the Mission Trail Art Market.
This hidden nook is well worth time exploring for learning and living! The San Elizario Historic Art District is easy to miss, but is an exquisitely preserved piece of history. It is the site of the First Thanksgiving, 1598--and after that punishing cross of the dry Chihuahua Desert by the still-continuing Northward migration, conquistadors, settlers, immigrants, travelers are ALWAYS grateful to reach the cool, fresh waters of the Rio Bravo/Rio Grande! Located in San Elizario, Texas, about 10 miles/16kilometers East of El PasoTX/Cd.JuarezMEX on the Socorro Road/Farm Road 258, this zone is historically accurate, the first seat of El Paso County, and site of the only jail Billy the Kid ever broke INTO! Veterans are remembered in the plaza of the Presidio Chapel (it is not a mission), and the stagecoach building now houses art galleries, which abound in easy walking distance. A walking tour of is highly recommended, as well as a visit to the Los Portales Museum & Information Center. Attend a production at the Adobe Horseshoe Theatre, where you can bring in eats. You won't starve either; Los Banditos Restaurant and Cafe Madrid offer the best meals and coffee you could ever want. I highly recommend spending at least a few hours here, absorbing the history and visiting with locals.
