My husband and I stopped for a visit to the Harber Wildlife Museum in Sherman, Texas. Although I am an adamant animal lover and cannot imagine shooting any of God's creatures (except for snakes), the Harbers have created an unbelievable museum from their lifetime passion. As a Texan, I would never have seen most of these magnificent creatures from all around the world. They are so well preserved, I could almost see them breathing. This is a wonderful educational museum and the staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. These creatures will live many lifetimes in Sherman!
I was taken aback when I walked into the museum. You can't comprehend how many dead animals are in that place, all hunted by the Harbers for sport. Walking through just made me more and more angry. If you're into lifestyles of the rich and famous in Grayson County and taxidermy as an art form, then by all means, go. My daughter, who was 10 at the time, found it upsetting.
We took our 5 year old to see the exhibit, and we all loved it. They have many really neat high quality exhibits. Some were even a little scary for the little one! It would be great to have a little more interactive stuff for the little ones though.
The animals in the Harber Wildlife Museum are done with masterful taxidermy, and the museum has a nice entrance area. However, there are a few serious problems with the museum. The first problem is that way too much information is given about the sponsors. This fact makes you feel like you are walking through someone's trophy room instead of a museum. And second, some items in the museum reflect poorly on the museum. The main items I am talking about are sculptures made out of elephant ivory tusks in the artifacts room.
I have been through this museum several times, always with grandchildren. There are many, many animals, large and small from little beetles to a giant elephant and huge giraffes. The first trip or two I was struck by how many animals there were. Then, one of my grandchildren asked, "Why did they kill all these animals?" and it made me think. These animals were killed by two expert game hunters purely for the sport of it. Such beautiful creatures killed for no other reason than the fun of killing and the show of what the Harbers have done. One of my little granddaughters calls it the "Dead Animal Zoo", so if you're into that sort of thing, I guess it would be enjoyable.
You will be surprised that this exhibit is in Sherman. Great place to take the kids for an outting. I am told that the animals are changed out from time to time. You will never believe how many are in the museum.
I thought it would be okay but boy was I in for a surprise! This is not just a few tiny exhibits, kind of put here and there, it is a world class musuem adventure! The taxidermy work is such that you expect to see them move! Expect to be overwhelmed and in awe of the animals, the ambience, and the displays. It was a cool place to spend a hot afternoon and the price was really cheap - $5! Easily could have been double that or more and still worth it! Kids will love it but adults too will find much there to enjoy. Resource room has some very interesting travel slides playing. Can't say it enough...go, be amazed, and definately get your money's worth! Thank you to the Harbers for putting such a gorgeous and educational instution in our area!
Lots of cool animals from around the globe. This is definitely a place to visit while in the Sherman area. It is also a great place to take kids.
I took my kids here on a rainy day cost mt $5 so that was a great price for 3 people. They have several different animals and the kids loved tooling for some more hidden animals. They had great displays and very friendly staff. Just wish the place was bigger!
What a unique experience. The place is beautiful. There are many on going dioramas with exotic animals from all ends of the world. The knowledge one can gain from exploring this museum is remarkable. Perfect for children interested in wildlife and what kinds of animals roam the earth. I have been to numerous wildlife museums around the country and this one is a top contender. Thank you Keith for the personal tour!
This is a lovely small museum with amazing wildlife. We were impressed with the layout and variety of all the animals. This museum would be appropriate for all ages.
A lot of effort for a very nice museum. It would be better appreciated if it were adjacent to a library, other museums or arts district.
From out of town and stopped in. The gentleman that was working was very nice and helpful. If u got a spare hour u should check it out. Well worth the 5.00 donation.
Very interesting wildlife museum. The wildlife display ranges from African Wildlife to the Polar Bears. There is a small fish exhibit along with an ongoing film about our planet in a small theater. You are treated to the sights and sounds of jungle as you walk though the indoor air conditioned tour. The Harbers have spared no expense in creating this museum. There is a small $5.00 fee for adults. Open on Thursday - Sunday. Hours vary check their website for details. If you're in the Sherman, TX area and looking for something to do this is a great place to visit
