bighorn national forest

We stopped at Bighorn National Forest on our way from the Black Hills to Yellowstone. Look... very little is going to compete with the natural beauty of either of those places. But Bighorn comes darn close... and without any of the crowds or development to distract. We stopped at the Ranger station along Route 16 just west of Buffalo. Very helpful with advice and guidance. Then we traveled along Route 16 through the park. Lots of great places to stop for a quick hike or to view the wildflowers. If you want a great view, stop off at High Park Overlook. It is a little off the main road and a short, rather steep hike. But the views are incredible in all directions.

The Bighorns provide a wonderful silhouette West of Sheridan, WY. Year round fun is easily accessible. Rock sliding down cold streams in August, gives way to moonlight X-C skiing in February. The riparian areas team with wildlife. The Public Land User Committee (PLUC) has maps available for recreational users. Enjoy northern WY. Get out and walk / run / bike / hike!

I have back packed and hiked the back country of the Big Horns and it was an amazing experience. Would recommend it to any one that likes to be outdoors.

Took a detour through the Bighorn Mountains to get from Mt. Rushmore to Yellowstone. Absolutely worth it. By far, Bighorn Forest outshines those other two National sites. Amazing, snow-capped mountains await you along a curving, climbing-ever-higher drive between craggy cliffs and a gorgeous river. The view from Sheridan Falls tourist stop inside of Bighorn Forest is worth another detour - you can view the falls up close and stop in awe to admire the scenery around you. As you exit the parking heading toward Yellowstone, the landscape immediately changes and is eerily desert-like. So neat!I hope to return to hike this forest someday - its beauty is truly magnificent/

Enjoyed all of it. Better than expected. Enjoyed the actual statues and history more than a lot of other experiences

We didn't stop and explore the mountains on our drive from Sheridan to Cody but we didn't enjoy the scenery of the Bighorn Mountains. There are lots of turnouts for photos and viewing along the mountain road. We saw lots of signs of people using the mountains and the forest for horseback riding and hiking.

The mountains are so vast and beautiful! And there is no one there. Very peaceful with amazing views.

We went on a multi-day backpacking trip; the scenery was spectacular; it was easy to navigate on the trails. We were in the Cloud Peak Wilderness area for much of our trip, so we had to ford creeks, but we expected that and were prepared for it. Gorgeous wildflowers this time of year; we saw Moose, Pika, and Mule Deer.

Okay so I have never been to Wyoming before and all I am thinking is why not!? It's the most beautiful state in the US, from border to border, it's breathtaking, if you've never been you must go, it's absolutely spectacular!

We were driving from Sheridan to Cody and we had to cross Bighorn National Forest.It was a great drive with lots of views and wonderfull nature.The roads are very good and after every corner you get another surprising sight.

Climbing out of Sheridan for about 2 hours, Hwy 14 is a fantastic way to see the amazing geology and forests surrounding the city. Shell Falls is a must stop. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the incredible beauty this shirt drive offers.

From Yellowstone to Cody, driving on Rt. 14. Bighorn National Park is yet another natural surprise. There simply aren't enough adjectives to describe this and all the scenic wonders in Wyoming. A week surely doesn't permit you to see everything.The dramatic landscape is breathtaking! Note the huge rocks that stand alone - some as big as a house. Apparently these were moved by glacial action.You'll get to 9,033 feet above sea level. Drink lots of water. Be prepared to be awed by what you see.The downside here (and in many areas) is to see the damage being bone to the trees by the Pine Bark Beetle.

we traveled the 14A "Scenic route", it was snowing but melted on the road, there were dear, and sheep all over. It was fascinating and beautiful

We came out from virgiia for a Wyoming High Country trail ride. I thought I was giving my son and I a memorable experience and I was not wrong!We did this ride summer of 2012I was back in Powell, Wyo in 2013 and Cody in 2014 to visit.What a beautiful place! I sure hope to come back to ride again someday.

I never had the chance to really hike it, but from town to the Wyoming High Country Lodge, I had the chance to visit the waterfalls (4 miles from the lodge Rt 13) and had the opportunity to see the beauty while driving. SPEECHLESS! I can't even describe the beauty as I left-- fog, light rain, sunrise (9am). I included a picture below of the BGM Basin. The lodge was amazing too. Seriously, fell in love with Wyoming and can't wait to go back-- for a calmer visit--I was there for a wedding so it was INTENSE the entire 48 hours I was there!!!
