While they are in a new space and they are just getting set up, Pete answered all our questions, and then some. For a city in southern New Mexico to have an exhibit of this quality and extent is surprising and heartening. A must see for anyone wanting more info on the shroud.
When we arrived at the museum Deacon Pete the overseer of the museum greeted us and was a wealth of information about the shroud. If you are interested in the shroud that many of us believe belonged to Our Savior, you may want to ad this to your bucket list! Upcoming grand opening in their new location down town (Late January 2015). 923 South New York Avenue, Alamogordo, New Mexico.
Went here mostly cause we were walking by and it was free. This place kinda looks like its straight out of 1985, with old tv's playing old videos of old info about the shroud. You kind of just make your way around the space reading different older looking charts and posters etc about the Shroud. I've seen several shows on TV about the Shroud and read about it as well and I didn't really see anything new here that I hadn't heard. The guy in there working was really friendly and willing to talk. I guess if you are religious this might be a more interesting experience. Side note--This just shows you how LAME the Mall is here, what mall has a Shroud exhibit in it? Pathetic Alamogordo thats who.
We only ducked in to see as we had a dog with us. It's was a very interesting exhibit for us non - religious historians.
Thanks Trip Advisor! Pete was great. I feel like I've met a new friend. Pete knows his stuff. If your sceptical go any way. It's very interesting, and a great place to visit. We went after watching a matinee -God Is Not Dead. I appreciate the fact that this exhibit is free.
It is located in the White Sands Mall next to J.C. Pennies. I found it very interesting. It is a large replica of the Shroud of Turin. The personnel do an outstanding job of explaining the facts about the shroud . The original is located in Turin, Italy.
We had some time on our hands on Friday, April 4th, when we first arrived in Alamogordo for a speaking and book signing engagement. Once we settled into the hotel, we looked at Trip Advisor for suggestions on local attractions to visit. We thought the Shroud Exhibit sounded very interesting. What a special treat! Pete, the person responsible for the creation and management of the museum and Sharon the volunteer we met there were inspiring to us! We were so surprised to hear about the New Mexico Scientist's expedition to the Shroud of Turin in the late 70s. We were amazed at the scientific detail and actual replica of a 3D image of the shroud allowing to actually see Jesus inside the shroud!. You must see this exhibit! Don't miss it! Phil and Rosanne Archuletta, Santa Fe, New Mexico
You can find this small but very worthwhile in the mall at Alamogordo. Go into Penney's from the parking lot and head right for the entrance into the mall hallway. It is the first place on the right in the hallway. Staff is very friendly and knowledgable and there are a lot of small exhibits relating to the shroud, but the most impressive is the back- lighted life size photograph which is displayed on one wall. They have padded church pews so you can sit and reflect as you view the shroud and also watch a short video explaining how science has corroborated the biblical aspects of Jesus' death and burial. There are some items you can purchase but we just left a small donation in the jar. I hope more people avail themselves of the opportunity to visit this wonderful museum. Alamogordo has so many fine places to visit. This should also be one of them!
Stopping by the local White Sands mall we were pleasantly surprised to find Deacon Ron and his band of volunteers displaying a life size replica of the Shroud. The informative and interesting staff knew both the factual explination of the display and the spiritual of this this relic. A very hands on museum and you can take a great deal in while there. I highly recomend this place.
This is a treasure of international interest and the subject of many documentaries. I had seen most of them and personally believed in the authenticity of the shroud after seeing them. I learned so much more in my visit that it further confirmed my belief that the shroud is in deed the burial cloth of Jesus. The very knowledgeable volunteers deliver the factual scientific evidence and historical information in a compelling way. Our kids (8, 12 and 14) were all engaged for the 90 minutes of our visit. Given the quality of this reproduction of the actual shroud and the other photographic and digital renderings the experience is actually superior to viewing the real thing. I wish we lived closer so we could take friends and members from our church.
Small but interesting museum. Staff friendly & very knowledgeable about shroud. Saw the show on discovery about shroud & this gives you more info & a hands on feeling. Even the grandkids liked it. Hint: Turn left when you enter the mall & go down to the end. It's on the left side near Pennys.
Found out about this exhibit/museum looking for something to do in Alamogordo or Ruidoso area while planning a day trip with friends. Both couples are Catholic and our spouses are Deacons in the church, so I suggested we go here. None of us had heard about the museum or the New Mexico connection to all the scientific research related to the Shroud. The Deacon that was there showed us the short informational video, and then answered our questions, we ended up spending 2 hours, and left with a ton of information to digest, both scientific and spiritual. It was well worth the trip and the time we spend there. If you are going to be in the area please take the time to see this museum, you won't be disappointed.
This is one of the most fascinating museums in New Mexico; it is in the White Sands Mall in Alamogordo, NM. The Shroud of Turin is actually a special part of New Mexico's own history, and it was part of the Centennial celebration last year, with speakers from all over the world. It was in Albuquerque that the Shroud of Turin Project began, and the famous project itself included many scientists from Los Alamos! Plus, the research is ongoing, so New Mexico is still part of the Shroud. The museum's founder, Peter Schumacher, was the original VP-8 image analyzer production engineer during the 1970s. He gives great tours and explains how the VP-8 was involved in the early studies of the Shroud. You can even try the machine yourself, because the museum holds one of the few left in the world. He is glad to answer any questions. There is a life-size photo of the Shroud under special lighting, so it feels like you are looking at the original. There are also several "3-D" pictures of the Shroud, developed by Dr. Petrus Soons (who himself comes up from South America to give presentations)--and you have to wear the 3-D glasses to view these so that they seem to come alive. Kids will love this especially!Other distinguished guests come throughout the year, including the Shroud of Turin Project's Dr. John Jackson, Dr. Eric Jumper, and the shroud.com founder Barrie Schwortz. Wow, these presentations are historical, and well worth planning for! This place is magical. Personally, I believe I am looking at the face of God when I see these beautiful photos of the Shroud of Turin. Prepare to be amazed. As for the White Sands Mall, it is a lot of fun and the food is fantastic. There are 2 Chinese buffet-style cafes, and I also like Juan's Cactus Café, which is a New Mexico original.
We stumbled on this one. This is a must-see if you're into history/christianity. The person working the museum showed us a true-sized photo of the shroud and some special equipment developed by a group of engineers that's used to examine and image the shroud. Admission is free. It's well worth the trip to see the shroud photo, as well as all of the other exhibits here.
I have no words but only that it is surreal that something like this occured......you must see this museum.........your children and your childrens chidren must see this and we must never let this history die.............!
