Good little visit to learn something about the history behind some of Portsmouth. We had an enjoyable time.
What a nice little place to walk to while you're in Portsmouth. You'll learn a lot about the town when it was first starting out here in America.
Building was impressive, but i think it would benefit from a shift to emphasise it's later colonial revival days and perhaps something more about its use as an early venue for social events. The docent was lively, interested and well informed. Such enthusiasm is contagious.
Loved seeing this historic home and hearing it's story. The location was perfect for parking. Historic New England has done a great job with this home.
Great, nice, open, airy. Lovely architecture. Lovely gardens, tho did not have time to browse. Also an architectural exhibit at end of tour, did not have time to peruse so allow a bit of extra time for that!!! it looked really great hope it comes back to Boston so I can really see it!
Our friends had their wedding outside this historic home in the back garden. It was one of the nicest quaint outdoor ceremonies I have ever seen. The garden was nicely decorated and they had a small violin group off to the side. This was a great place to come and a great alternative to a traditional church wedding. I would highly suggest to anyone thinking of getting married in the Portsmouth area.
I was lucky enough to be married at the Langdon House last September. The grounds are beautiful and open to the public - it's worth walking the few blocks from Market Square to wander through the back lawns. The gardens are very well-kept and there is a gorgeous arbor crawling with grape and rose vines that runs down the entire length of the lawn. There is also a lovely little hidden grove in the trees at the very back of the property. There are tours of the house itself as well, but you may have to check the website for more information about that. Overall just a beautiful piece of New England history!
This home located in central Portsmouth, NH was exquisite. We are SO GLAD that we joined the Historic House Society, which is really reasonable and one gets to visit lots of Historic homes for FREE! Our guide was very friendly and open to all sorts of questions with excellent and thoughtful answers. Learning about Colonial times and the growing pains when America's surge for Independence from England was supported by only 1/3 of the people, was very eye-opening..and showed how political ideas are sometimes not everyone's cup of tea...and yet, they definitely affect the taste! The Sea Embargo in President Jeffersen's time affecting the coastal seaports in New England was maneuvered masterfully by Gov. Langdon and his ship building and sea merchant friends and townsfolk. There was an Photographic Art Exhibit also at the House of "The White Churches of New England"..highlighting architectural features in one of the grand rooms. Challenge yourself to learn about America from Americans..go see the Historic Houses, the houses themselves tell the story best of all!
We had the pleasure of following in George Washington's footsteps this past weekend. If you are someone who likes visiting historic old homes, this is one of the nicest ones in Portsmouth. It is the home of a colonial entrepreneur who was one of the founding fathers of New Hampshire. The house is impressive, and so are the gardens. It is a quick tour (less than an hour) but worth the visit.
