This is a classic taproom. Small, quaint, cozy. Maybe seats 50 people. Old, original wood. An operating brewery in the back. I had the black IPA and it was wonderful. Walk up service, no table service. This is a social setting with tables oriented for conversation. A steady stream of people filling growlers. No TVs. A unique experience. Great place for beer and conversation. No food served but you can bring your own.
The location in downtown Buffalo across from the lake has loads of character. The interior is a cluster of small tables and chairs that encourages interaction with guests and a long bar that promotes chatting with your neighbor. Get there early or you may be standing at the bar--that is not a bad thing! There are a variety of beers (all made on site) on tap that will please any palate--stouts to IPA's and even a red! Prices are reasonable ($5 for 16 oz and $2 for 5 oz), you can also get a "flight" that is 5 or 6 5 ounce beers--a taste of each. The beers are listed on a board with alcohol content and bitterness ratings. The staff takes the time to explain each flavor if you are a newcomer. You can even get a tour of behind the scenes. The glasses are sanitized before each beer is poured!Hayes does NOT serve food, however, they encourage you to bring your own, or you can order from local restaurants and have it delivered. They also have food trucks available on some weekends. There is entertainment on some weekends, including local Irish and/or folk music otherwise there is Irish rock/folk music playing on speakers. In addition, Hayes has several board games laying around. There are no TV's so don't expect any NASCAR or NFL, it would take away from the charm of Hayes. Future upgrades include outdoor seating and cosmetic changes to the outside of the building.Hayes' facebook page is updated daily with current brews on tap and weekend activities. Right now Hayes is only open a limited number of days of the week, but any more and it could lose its charm! In addition, you can purchase a growler (64 ounces) of your favorite and bring it home with you!
This was a surprising stop. We had heard that a new pub had opened up in the area and decided to stop by to try it out. It is just a tiny little place on the corner, and the owners are working hard to get your business. They have just a few craft beers that they are making - we sampled them all. Quite good! They have games to play if you want to hang out but they do not have food. The only downfall is that they might run out of beer - small and they appear to be selling it faster than they can make it. Nice to see people taking chances on new things these days. We will be back!
