I'm a little late writing this review however it's a worthwhile stop off in the area.Even on a misty, damp day the scale of the mining operation was obvious and the giant dump truck at the summit made it more real. The gentleman operating the gift shop was fascinating and had many tales to tell. He was also great at answering our many questions.Amazing to see the lake directly opposite the visitor centre and the photos of it as a working mine.Don't miss it - I would have posted photos however they seem to large to be allowed by Trip Advisor
We have visited the top of this mountain many times. When our kids went with us or when we were introducing relatives to the area. It is still a joy to visit every time. In the visitors building there always is a retired miner there who is happy to chat with you about the mines. If you want to go we would advise that you go soon. It seems that there is talk between the town and the mining company. The mining co. wants to tear the site down to mine it. That would be bad because it really is a nice place to visit. We have had picnics there and you can see for many miles. It is just very interesting to see how the area was developed.
You have to see this. Little kids all the way to adults will find this so interesting. My boys are 15 and 12 and loved it! The mining dump truck stands 22 feet tall, the tires alone are about 8 feet tall. Very impressive! The other mining equipment is very interesting too. There's a beautiful view of an old mining pit that's now full of water, and distant views of other mines in the area. We went in the Fall so the colors were awesome. There's a small museum with the usual souveniers, a very informative man who works there, plus a bathroom and bottled drinks. It's all free. We spent an hour there, but you can easily make it a quick stop. Hours 9am to 6pm. Closes the end of Sept.
We had hoped to tour a mine, but were advised that this practice was ended after 9/11. This attraction is located at a gift shop with an interesting gentleman who is knowledgeable and helpful. We were able to see the original mine that has filled with water, and across the highway were able to see the large equipment working the current mine. A little difficult to find.
See the HUGE mining vehicles and tires and mine overlook--even though this mine has water in it so you couldn't see how deep the mine was.
I have been to the Iron Range many times but today was my first trip to Mineview at the southern edge of Virginia. Even with a heavy sky, the panoramic view was tremendous, and pit lake over which or through which MinnDOT is going to have to build a road is amazing. Mineview is an attraction of limited duration as the mining company that owns the land is going to mine it, taking out the state highway in the process. The shop on the site is fun, and the man who runs it has many stories and all the local mining news. The giant trucks, smaller than what are used now, are sure to impress.. The area is beautiful, so come take a look!
Very interesting and a nice rest spot as you are traveling along the highway. Very interesting that you would see something like this in the middle of a city. It's a winding road to ascend to the top where you will see how the mining was done.
Learn about mining, see the mines in work and stretch your legs here!!! See how the mountains used to look, get up close and personal with 2 HUGE dump trucks. Visit soon, they will be closing it in the next couple of years so they can mine the iron ore from under it. They will be rerouting the main road into/out of Virginia!!!! The best part was it's FREE!!!! Very easy to find right off US 53!!!
What a great stop for the family- another bonus its FREE! Its neat to see the size trucks and the kids were amazed. Fun to walk around and see what its all about. Only downside was that it was a dreary day. Will stop again to see the trucks
We take all of our visiting relatives to this viewing site. I affords a great look into the past. The abandoned natural iron ore just below (now a 600' deep lake). Also to west can be seen an operating taconite (low grade iron ore) mine with all the shovels, trucks and drills.
We stopped on out way out of town on a cold Friday just before it closed at 6:00. The signs don't really do it justice. It has a great view in 3 directions, and the huge dump trucks were really interesting. There is a small playground for the kids, and hiking trails. Well worth the time to stop, and after all, it's free!
I was in town for work and stopped by here. Pictures people have posted represent it just fine. Great view below of the lake. The dump trucks were amazing. Was a quick stop before park closed at 6pm.
Just south of Virginia is a little road you could easily miss but don't. The view is very pretty. That's all it is, a view but worth stoping. They have 2 big trucks you can take your picture by and a little gift shop.
We passed through Virginia, Minnesota on the way up north, and stopped by this place to show our kids where steel comes from. We came away with breathtaking views, but also a fun picture to float around to our friends in front of the HUGE, MONGO dump-truck! If you have a little boy who loves construction vehicles, you MUST go. If you have a family who might be interested in a 1/2 hour rest to see some magnificent country, industry, and maybe get a little education on the stuff the Iron Range" is known for, take the short drive up and take a look. It is worth the trip either way.
What an amazing view! I just caught a glimpes of the mine and it took me 10 mins and 10 miles searching and reading on my iphone to find out what I had seen. We turned around, drove back and were soooo glad we did. We lucked out and was there at the same time a former mine employee was up there taking some pictures. We learned so much more that ever possible from reading what was posted around. The mine at the base of the lookout area, which closed in 1977, is large but nothing compared to the one across the hwy. The size of the equipment on site, plus the size of the open pit across the highway was amazing! On top of it all, it's free.
