Lake Ahquabi is a nice place to go to camp, fish, picnic and hike. It has a lodge that you can rent out for family get togethers. It has air conditioning and a fireplace. There are grills, shelters and picnic tables throughout the park. Paddleboats and other boats can be seen in the water. We have used this park numerous times. Our kids especially liked to take their friends and camp there with a campfire.
We first went and drove around one day to check things out, very pretty there. Good restrooms and tons of trees. We went back the next day to visit the beach area with the kids. Grills and picnic tables all around, easy access. Just Beautiful!
who knew that just a few miles south of Indianola lies over 700 acres of prime park? 115 acres of lake; a youth camp; campsites; hiking; mountain biking; a beach; even a concession stand! this is a decent place to go and get away for awhile.
I've visited and camped at Lake Ahquabi many times over the years and would highly recommend this park. The lodge is a nice place for family gatherings. The campgrounds are great. Good rates..
Great park just wish it was more wheelchair friendly on the path around park and some of the restrooms. Over all I would tell someone to go there. Great place to watch the sun in the morning and at night
This a beautiful state park with a nice lake. Camping for both RV's, trailers, and tents is available. Two boat ramps are available, with plenty of parking spaces. There is a swimming beach and paddle boat rental. Fishing is good, with plenty of places for good shore fishing, as well as a fishing house built over the lake for disabled fisherpersons. Picnic areas are well kept and there are several shelters available. There is a walking, biking trail around the lake.
Well maintained campgrounds with clean showers and bathrooms. Fun trails to walk around lake.Close to town for supplies. Our family loves to rent the beach shelter for picnics and events and has plenty of parking, electricity, fireplace and grills. Also picnic tables and restrooms.
Lake Ahquabi is a very pretty state park just south of Indianola which is about a half hour south of Des Moines. There are a couple of beautiful stone shelters that you can have a picnic in if they aren't rented. There is a small beach and swimming area. You can rent paddle boats and there's a nice fishing dock with part of it covered. The park also has some nice hiking trails but not a lot of parking by the lake. Its a pretty spot to spend the afternoon or evening. We had a picnic supper last week and it was very peaceful. There were a few families swimming and fishing but it was not the least bit noisy. It was beautiful to watch the sun go down behind the hills.
Alot of recent updates going on. Park is a great place to walk, jog and swim. Nice camp facilities and close to home.
Lake ahquabi is a beautiful local state park 30 minutes from Des Moines Iowa. There are lovely trails which are always clean and well maintained. There is a handicapped accesible fishing area which is quite unique. A lodge and two shelter houses can be reserved for around $50 per day. Otherwise all use of the park is free. There are no fees for entrance or parking. Because the swimming beach is free, it can be very crowded on hot days, otherwise the park is rarely overused. Swimming is typical for Iowa lakes: mud bottom and the water is murky. The hike around the entire lake is about 4 miles and almost completely shaded.
We went here looking to get away from the city and get some privacy. This is definitely not the place, it is very crowded and with no privacy, no trees or nothing to separate you and your neighbor. It is a beautiful and wonderful campground and lake but not for someone that wants to get the feel of "camping" and being out in the woods.
I grew up in the same neighborhood as the Lake. It is beautiful and well maintained! It is always a good place to picnic, boat or cool off at the beach.
Good camping and hiking. Always look forward to visiting.
want to spend a relaxing day at the lake or hit the trails?? this place is great! www.zachsvoboda.com
