We had some visitors from Portland, Oregon. We and they have tasted Oregon wines for over a decade. I chose 3 Horse Ranch as our first winery to visit. All of us were a bit skeptical about Idaho wine in general, and our skepticism grew as we drove the roads to 3 Horse Ranch. The good news is that all 4 of us were very happy with our experience! The two ladies on duty that Sunday were not only knowledgeable but also extremely polite and service-oriented. The 4 of us sat outside. They served us several wines in succession while we sat in the sunshine and snacked on a great Artisan Cheese Tray that looked like it was from a bistro in Portland! It had 3 kinds of cheese, raw almonds, a baguette, some apple slices, and it all paired nicely with the wines we tried. The ladies also offered us some water that emanates from a spring on their land. It was naturally bubbly and great-tasting! All the wines were good. We bought several to take home with us. It made for a very fond memory for the 4 of us.

Just moved to Boise from Portland , we love to wine taste, so when we were in Costco we saw a gentleman promoting 3 horse winery. We decided to try the place out, man it's way way way out of town, the wine was good, but we are very spoiled so our standards are very high. The owner was very friendly and nice !

My wife and I had the pleasure of being invited with a group of friends for a tour and picnic at 3 Horse Ranch Vineyards, for our first visit. We have enjoyed their wines for many years, particularly their Reserve Rose which has received awards and praise from many sources, as have most of their other 12 distinctive wines. Our event started with a tour of the vineyards which stretch west down the valley and up the hills to the north, creating South facing exposure. They are beautiful sights to see, vast green space surrounded by sage brush and pasture. At the highest point the owner, Martha Cunningham, (husband Gary is co owner but was out of town) had set up cloth covered tables where we enjoyed a meal of cold and delicious salmon, asparagus, rice and a chocolate desert, a perfect picnic scene as the sun settled in the west. It was a special evening and if you are thinking of entertaining or enjoying a group activity, I would recommend it. They also offer wine tasting Wednesday through Sunday from 12pm to 6pm. The 3 Horse Ranch is located far out in the Idaho countryside, about 50 minutes from Boise. The drive there is really interesting and was, even to me, a native Idahoan. There are two ways to get there. One way is to go North on Eagle Road which is a main north south street in the valley. This eventually turns into a dirt road and you go until you get to Pearl Road and turn left and there it is. The other way to go is 1. Head NW on W State St (7.3 mi) 2. W State becomes ID-44 (6.8 mi) 3. Turn right onto Hwy 16/ID-16 (Emmett Hwy) (6.3 mi) 4. Turn right onto Chaparral Rd (portions unpaved) (3.1 mi) 5. Turn slight left onto Pearl Rd (portions unpaved) (2.4 mi). We enjoyed both drives and a delightful, different and thoroughly enjoyable evening.

First had 3 Horse wine at the Eagle, Idaho farmers' market. That experience mandated I find the mother vinyard out in the way out. After going down the road least travelled we came upon the modest winery with the enormous heart and excellent wines. Favorite is Vivacious wine. Buy the three pack. These wines are getting more and more popular for one reason. They're the nectar of the gods. Take a drive there and you will not be disappointed.

Thank goodness for the signs along the gravel road to find this winery! Several times along the 4 miles heading out into the middle of Idaho countryside I wondered if checking out this winery was really worth the effort. And yes, yes it was!The tasting room is in a converted modest farm house. The two women working the tasting room were fun, friendly, and knowledgeable about wine and food and the Boise area. The wines were very good. We particularly enjoyed the Pinot Gris, Rose, and Merlot. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of the wines. We ended up buying several bottles of wine and were thrilled to learn that 3 Horse Ranch wines appear on wine lists around the Pacific Northwest. We will now be on the lookout for them.
