I would recommend this place to anyone who loves the great outdoors and can safely hike back in for about a mile. I carried a simple book bag to hold a water bottle, a flashlight, camera, p.j.'s, jacket and comb. If you plan to take a nice warm shower, BYO soap, towel, etc. Bathrooms are in a separate building and clean. The place is under new management and the food is exceptional! We stayed nice and warm overnight using the wood heater (and since there is no electricity), a kerosene lamp provided light. The Corn Crib was nice and private; the only downside was not having a little screened-in porch as the late afternoon & evening was fairly buggy. The bed was okay, but not the Ritz. ;-) The stars were amazing! The history is interesting. The company of other hikers and staff was also very enjoyable. We also hiked to the Twin arches -- fantastic! In fact, the entire Big South Fork has wonderful hiking trails for people on foot and on horses. The area is full of God's beauty and wonder. Charit Creek is a rare jewel in the midst of it all; I'm so thankful for the experience of it all!

My Grand and great grandchildren loved this place. Took four wheelers back on the trails to the old gravesite of my great great great Grandfather Johnathon Blevins.

This rustic lodge can be reached by hiking just over a mile from the closest parking lot. You can stay hostel style or for a bit more money they will prepare good hot meals for you. They supply wood for the fireplaces in the bunkhouses and hot showers. There is a nice dining area where you are served your meals with full service. I didn't spend the night on this trip, but I have stayed here. You can buy a snack and eat it in a rocker on the porch if you are just hiking through. No fee to look; fees apply to eat or stay overnight.

This place is so cool!! It was definitely worth the hike there. My father and I stayed in a bunk room on a cold January night with 10 other hikers and it was warm and clean! We shared Charit Creek with a Sierra Club outing, Boy Scouts and about two dozen other hikers with the Sheltowee Trace Association. The room we stayed in was part of the original cabin built in 1817?! (Charit Creek has the oldest buildings still in use by the NPS today). Pretty sweet... A wood stove kept us warm all night and at dinner. There is no electric, so kerosene lanterns illuminate bunk rooms and the dining hall. (the STA brought its own food, so no review there) there are two other bunkhouses and a small corn crib "love shack" but I didn't visit them. They looked nice with added bonus of screened in porches. The lodge rooms were tight but cozy. Be careful if you are on the top bunk- they are extremely close to the ceiling. Comfortable sleeping pads are offered along with wool blankets. BYO ear plugs. There is a picnic table in the room, several chairs and two kerosene lamps. I can't describe what a treat it was as a hiker to have flush toilets (heated) and clean running water to drink! The grounds were beautiful - tucked in a narrow valley with Charit Creek nearby and if the stars were out they would have been incredible I'm sure! Can't wait to visit again!

Charit Creek is a beautiful place to visit. Nice and quiet, great getaway. However it advertises fresh food made daily. My first visit to Charit, we had canned chicken and dumplings for dinner along with canned vegtables. My trip last month, we had frozen Stouffer's lasagna and canned green beans. Meals are definitely not as advertised.

If you want a special experience then plan an overnight horseback or hiking trip to Charit Creek. Deep within the Big South Fork National River & Recreation area this old lodge takes you back to a time of the settlers of this area. Fireside dining by lantern of simple food after a day of exploring is a real treat. The night sky can not be described.

This is such a great place to ride and have lunch on the porch. It is also called the Hostile. There is a steep hill that you either come down or go up. I prefer to come down it....otherwise you have to stop and rest your horse a number of times. GREAT ride and one of my favorites.
