We had an excellent thorough tour by Richie. We were able to walk around in each room and get a close-up look at everything. A wonderful video gave us an introduction to the Gomez Mill House. Lovely grounds for picture taking.
Haven't been here since my daughters went here on a school field trip. It is located on a very narrow dirt road. It is a very small building and most of the times, you are on your own to look at it without a guide or someone who knows the history. I'd skip this one.
Luis Moses Gomez was a member of the Court of France in the early 1700's and was warned to flee to escape the persecution of the Inquisition. Settling in Marlboro, New York, he built this fieldstone blockhouse in 1714 and started his business as a trading post. The house has since passed into the hands of many influential and interesting people and, today, is open as a museum. It is a beautiful place tucked away off Route 9W on Mill House Road. Due to hurricane damage, the Gomez Mill House has been closed for repair and restoration from August 2012 to mid-April 2013. The grounds are handicapped accessible. There is a modest fee charged for entrance to the buildings. Very interesting site with over 300 years of history behind it. Well worth visiting.
Nice little historial site, learned a few more things about the settling of the area
Who would have thought that the first Jewish resident of this area near the Hudson River had "Gomez" as his last name? A major point of this site is to inform us about the early Jewish settler of this area and the interesting backgrounds of the Gentiles who owned the house later. The video is especially informative. You can also view the property and learn more about it online by visiting gomez.org.
