This ferry trip was pleasant, albeit very windy up top! The insides were also pleasant, although there weren't many places to sit.
An Absolute Must.....Ride over on the Ferry To Block Island & Enjoy your day with numerous adventures....Did you know that Christopher Watkins has a home on the Island??? Well he does...
Ferry service is dependable to its schedule. You can count on them to depart and, weather permitting, to arrive on time. Food and drink service is so-so. Better idea to wait until you reach shore.
Great small island with two historic light houses - one which they had to move back from the edge due to erosion about 25 years ago. Lots of seaside shops with restaurants, art galleries and boutiques. Rent the motor cycles to travel the island. Get a map when you get off the ferry to guide you around. Fun place to spend a day or one overnight. More time than that isn't really needed.
The ferry was a great ride, on a clear day, taking 3 friends and myself over to Block Island. We sat outside on the upper deck and enjoyed the views while we were on the water. Very affordable, easy travel, nice to be able to just sit back and relax for an hour. We came back that way as well, after enjoying a day of beach, shopping and dnner. AWESOME!
The ferry is very efficient with its turnround. It has a snack bar on board and is clean, reasonably comfortable and the journey, although windy, was remarkably smooth.
Off season just and most things were closed for the winter, despite the amazing weather. We took a taxi around the island and got some lovely pictures, a decent trip taking about 90 minutes, and costing $55. The ferry itself is not a luxury vessel !
The trip to and from Block Island from Point Judith was comfortable even with some fairly rough seas heading to the island. Staff courteous.
Unless you fly, this is the way to get to Block Island. We had great, calm seas in both directions and there are booths and chairs on the second level, plus a doorway to the bow end of the ferry if you prefer to be outside. The only caveat is that you have to back onto the ferry - it is one-ended, not a ferry where you drive on, forward, and drive off, forward. The staff is great at both ends, Point Judith and at Block Island, but I was glad I was not driving because it is a VERY tight fit as you back on. You have to pay both a car fee (about $79 round trip) plus a passenger fee, per passenger. There is a concession on board that seems to have beverages and food - hot dogs and snacks both, and the passage is comfortable. If you are a foot passenger, you obviously don't have to drive in reverse!
Block Island ferry Is the best mode of transportation to the island. The 45 or so minute ride goes fast esp. If you are enjoying the scenery. We once caught a later trip as we missed our scheduled one. It is a good thing that we took the later one as we got to witness a gorgeous sunset. The top level provides the best view of the scenery....far above from the ocean spray. The rates are very reasonable hence we always chose to take our vehicle. It is a well run operation which always is on schedule.
This is a very exciting trip. Not only a great, and beautiful ferry ride. When you get to the island even if it is just for the day. Rent a moped, and go all over. Their is so much to see on this Island that is totally amazing. Not just the town when you get off the ferry. Their are land marked out for at the edges, and the light house is super! The farm to the left of town is totally amazing. The gift shops are all so cool, with so much different stuff. And plenty of nice and really good places to Eat, if it is breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a snack. you have to go around to the street behind and go to the down in ice ream store (to die for!) I can taste it now....You would regret this trip, I go over every time I go up. Because it is never the same anytime.....ENJOY!!!
If you are going take the slow ferry. This is a wonderful trip in good weather. Relax in the sun on the deck and arrive well rested for your adventure. Block Island is GREEN so take a sightseeing trip and be amazed.
we did a last minute trip to the island and booked our tickets on line. Much to our surprise we received a discount for advanced purchasing which was a nice bonus. The first trip out of the day and we had light food and beverages, muffins, bagels and coffee was enough to hold us till we got inland to eat a full breakfast. Great and easy to access and the parking was just as easy across the street.
We took the ferry with friends to hang out in Block Island for the day. Easy to purchase tickets and board. We also got the last parking spot for the car. They had plenty of room upstairs on the deck. There was also a bar that you could purchase drinks. Ferry didn't take very long, less than an hour, and docked right in the heart of the action. Beach club/bar was very close and if you walked a little up the street there was lots of little shops and restaurants. Took the last ferry back about 7:45pm and overall it was a great time.
Not a fan of boats (yes I get sea sick) but this was Ok. Took the ferry from New London and it was maybe 75 minutes. Never been to Block Island and wish I had more time. We rented Mopeds and that took 2 hours (only had 3 1/2 to be there due to ferry time). Left New London at noon arrived on Block Island at 1:15 and left Block Island at 5pm. Enjoyed the Moped as we got to see a lot of the island. Ate at Ballard's sat outside there were many beach goers and food was very food.
