I have a hard wanting to tell the general public of this place, but can't help it. This is hands down the most fabulous hike you can do in the Big Sky area. Backpacking is preferable and the scenery will not disappoint.

Drive to the trailhead and off you go. A variety of terrain as you do the 2-3 hr hike up to the lake. Meadow to trees to rocks, flat and rolling to switchbacks in the steeper areas. The most beautiful and colorful meadows of windflowers! Pack a lunch and bring water and bear spray, just in case. The lake at the top is big and clear, a great lunch spot and beyond are further areas to rock scramble and go up higher. A great way to spend the afternoon. Trail can be tricky in spots, be down before dark.

We hiked this trail in September 2014 and were in awe of the views. We've heard that this trail is even more amazing in the summer when the wildflowers are in full bloom. The trail isn't too difficult (I wouldn't call it easy), but it does climb a bit and may seem more strenuous if you aren't used to the elevation. Look for moose near the trail - we saw a momma and baby moose about 40 yards off the trail down by the creek. About halfway up, there is a rock pile that provides great views back down the valley you just hiked through and up to the mountains that surround the basin. Plus, you can enjoy the sounds of the pikas in the rocks. Take your time and make sure you bring water and snacks as this hike will take a bit of effort and time, but it is definitely worth it.
