We visited the museum to take our daughter on the dinosaur dig program. This was an excellent program where we drove out about 15 miles outside of town and went looking for dinosaur fossils. The kids learned what to look for, found a variety of bones and mapped the larger ones they found. We then went back to the lab and learned how to repair the fossils and how they are studied and prepared for display. Our daughter was so excited to find real fossils and learn more about the geology of fossils and biology of dinosaurs. It was the best possible way to learn about dinosaurs and some science.
You learn more about Montana's past, dinosaur excavations. The staff available on that day was Dixie - she was friendly, she helped us not only by sharing her knowledge of dinosaurs but also about places to eat in Malta. It is open on sundays between 12:30 - 5:30 in summers.
The experience at this museum was amazing. The staff are passionate and very interested in sharing thier knowledge. The array of fossils and information about them is fabulous, you really will be surprised when you visit. Great for adults and kids. My daughter who is 8 suggests the savenger hunt. We loved it so much, we ended up getting a member ship!
We were on the Dinosaur Trail in Sept 2013 and stopped in Malta, as it is on the tour. What a great find. It was probably one of the best that we saw in Montana, of the ten that we visited. The staff member there that day was very knowledgable and wanted to share everything dinosaur with us . We were so captivated that we stayed 2 hours and missed lunch. Sue, the curator, was really interesting to talk to and showed us the well preserved fossils and many bones they have on display. This is a very small museum but has a lot to show and well presented. I hope they can expand and make even more displays. Well worth the stop. Don't go hungry as there is no place to eat in Malta. We ate in the camper.
I was worried when we pulled up and I saw the size of the building; in my experience, dinosaurs take up a lot of room. What this place lacks in massive, awe inspiring replicas suspended in action poses under vaulted ceilings it makes up for in real content and unique (as in, truly one-in-the-world kind of special) fossil displays. The fact is, their main attractions are so well preserved and complete they don't need to be posed on metal rods. The staff member on duty was very informative and took me behind the scenes to show me some of the stuff in preparation and storage since we were the only ones there at the time. Sadly I did not make it to the county museum next door because we were on tight schedule but was told by staff that it also had some good dinosaur displays. Seeing as Malta is dinosaur central for well preserved finds I have no doubt this place will expand and improve the exhibit information displays in the future. It is worth a diversion if you are passing by and absolutely worth the entry fee.
This is a terrific little museum with excellent displays of dinosaurs, bones, and other fossils. The lab is a great place to see where the actual work takes place. Museum staff/volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly.
When I visited this small museum in Malta, MT, which is housed in a very nice modern building, I was the only person there. The person staffing the museum took the time to show me around their work room and explain some of the techniques they use to extract fossils from sandstone. The displays are well done. Not Smithsonian quality, but still worth seeing. They also sold some souvenir fossils at what I thought were reasonable prices. Overall a very good experience and worth the $5 admission fee. Don't forget to visit the Phillips County Historical Museum which is next door. I didn't, but I understand they also have dino exhibits.
You will find the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum very modern facility and attractive for a small museum. The folks will welcome you here will be happy to answer any and all questions. You may want to check out the worlds best preserved dinosaur - Leonardo- most all the internal organs and skin is preserved. This find has caused much of what they thought they knew about dinosaurs to be changed.
