The only snow I found this trip at Christmas was on the Scenic Highway....and there wasn't a lot ! Enjoyed seeing the area at a different time of year....Beautiful any season !
This road, especially from Cranberry Nature Center on Route 55/39 to Route 219 north of Marlinton, WV, is well maintained and bumper to bumper wild mountain scenery. the speed limit is lowered to 40 or 45 I believe, but I am usually rolling along slower than that. we go there to see migrating warblers in the spring and always get a lot to see. For motorcycles it is the best in the state. A couple hour journey for this stretch and well worth the time.Dislike- it is too short, we can get enough of it.
The Highland Scenic Highway in WV is WELL worth a ride. I went from US 219 across the Parkway section, then rode over to Richwood going west on a sunny late autumn afternoon, and had the roads all to myself along the entire route. I stopped along the parkway section to take in the fantastic vistas, and boy, you can really see quite the distance across many mountains, looking from either side of the ridge line up there. Riding from the Visitor Center (which was closed that day (Wednesday Oct 29, 2014) to Richwood is just as nice- a great drive through the mountain. Just lovely. If your travels take you anywhere near this part of the USA's East Coast, by all means, take the time to make this wonderful drive along the Highland Scenic Highway in beautiful West Virginia.
Went for a fall drive. Lots of fog so we'll have to try again. Drove from Richwood north. This is a scenic highway so no amenities!! Stop in Richwood or Marlington before getting on! Would recommend for fall foliage viewing!
The views are simply amazing! Take a lunch and stop at the overlook and just relax and feel the worries of the day wash away! The fall colors are amazing! In summer the view is of lush forest green!
We took the drive as a fall weekend getaway: windy roads, lots of mountains and valleys, spectacular views when the mist lifts.
Back to nature . . . it's a beautiful drive. Don't pass it up. This is an experience one should not miss, a truly relaxing and unique adventure. It was a beautiful fall foliage drive with absolutely breathtaking views. I will surely return to hike the trails. West Virginia at it's best. It's awesome.
We inadvertently came at the perfect time to see the leaves! The road was well maintained and had several great spots to stop and take pictures and just enjoy the gorgeous views. Would highly recommend!
Great Drive to see fall colors, and take some photos of fall colors. You may have one more week end for 2014 to take some fall color photos. We also stopped by to see the three water falls. Need to go see them. Impressive. Now the water level is very low at this time of year as many rivers do have water in them. The three water falls will be impressive in the spring after snow melting or after a lot of rain has hit the area. Overall a good fall drive to see the view of the mountains and landscape of the local areas of WV as you are at the highest points of the state. Also, if you like hiking in the woods, looks like they have many trails to explore. Enjoy mother nature at its best. Easy driving on the paved highway with many pull outs to stop at. Bring your camera.
We took this ride Labor day weekend. What beautiful views! Not alot of traffic so we weren't rushed. Just wish we would have gotten to see a bear!
I got this tip to take this road from a local WV resident. GREAT views from all of the lookouts, and very nice views all throughout the 22 miles. Mountains, valleys and you can see beautiful scenery for miles.
If you aren't impressed with this drive then you watch too much TV. This is unobstructed nature at her best! From Cranberry Glades where a few plants grow only here and in Canada to mountains so high that their growth is stunted. Bear, deer, just beautiful.
We took this trip in August, so the trees were full and green, but with no fall colors. We started out in Fayetteville and took 19 to 41 and made a loop coming home to 219 and then 60 back to Fayetteville. In all honesty the portion of the trip labeled The Highland Scenic Highway was like driving through any other road in West Virginia. Lots of trees hungging the road, very few open vistas and not much along the route. The falls of Hill creek were just a trickle and Cranberry Glades was interesting, an easy boardwalk, but again not much interest. I enjoyed the ride along 219 much better. There were wide open views of green rolling hills, many more long distance views and we hit Bearstown State Park along the way, a great surprise. I'm not saying don't take the drive, perhaps in the fall it is much more beautiful, but personally I enjoyed the ride along 219 much better.
There was very little traffic, so we could go as slowly as we wanted to, to admire the beautiful scenery. Plenty of places to pull over. Lots of marked trails to hike.
Lots of views and photo opportunities. We were there during the shutdown so we can't comment on the facilities
