No matter how often you go, their changing exhibits keep you coming back. This is an essential cultural piece of this community. It highlights the multiethnic flavor of our world.
I especially liked some special exhibits on black art that were there recently but their other exhibits are good and often changing and you can get a library pass to visit for free.
It's silly that it took my family and I over 14 years to visit the Danforth Museum of Art. I knew they offered art classes but, I was not aware of the wide range of art forms that were represented. I especially loved the children's wing with art from books or about children's subjects. The atmosphere is calm and tranquil even if some of the artwork isn't. Entry fee is inexpensive and there is free on-site parking (or you can park at the Library).
The Danforth Museum has grown a lot over the years. Under its current director, Kathrine French, the museum has had a number of wonderful exhibits and I find it to be a museum well worth the visit. Their special exhibitions have been excellent, well mounted and of a very high calibre. There has been a special effort to explore the Boston Expressionist artists over the past few years, yielding excellent retrospective exhibitions of these fine world class artists. The permanent collection is also growing and gaining a fine reputation in this region. The special exhibitions feature the work of local artists, regional artists and national and international artists. it is a very nice addition to the cultural fabric of the MetroWest Boston area. The museum will be moving eventually to a new location in Framingham Center. A note: if you live in the MetroWest area it is possible your library has a family pass to the museum......well worth checking out.
Off the Wall, A Community of Artists, and Picture This can be seen for one more week. The first two show a great variety of work from local artists. This museum will be moving to a larger building in Framingham, and hopefully will be equipped with air conditioning.
pictures tend towards the more contemporary. small museum. easy to see it all in an hour or less. parking available.
and found myself lost in wonder. Modern art and private collections, this is a small and unique find, perfect for meditation and just getting a different perspective. Rare and eclectic.
Danforth is becoming the museum to visit for a look at contemporary New England art (a really comprehensive and well-chosen invitational each year) and a strong collection of the Boston Expressionists. You can see this museum in about an hour (and have a terrific and unbelievably cheap meal at the Brazilian restaurant across the street). Not much else to see in the vicinity, unfortunately, but easy enough to get to from Route 9.
It has been several years since I went to the Danforth. As I recall, it was a surprisingly lovely museum...surprising because it is nestled in downtown Framingham, a place I would not have expected such a nice art museum.I highly recommend a visit!
The outside is nothing to look at, but the guts of the museum are busting. This is not a museum you will spend an entire day in, but they have a good variety of ever changing works. I've taken several classes at the museum and find the staff very knowledgable and very helpful.
The Danforth doesn't make a good first impression - the brick building could easily pass for an old apartment complex - but the small exhibit space inside is used well. There's always something interesting to see. They also offer very good classes.
