I was late for my appointment and they could have turned me away. However Rick did everything that he could to accommodate my son and I. Jarrod was our driver and he was wonderful. I have rented from a few of the bike shuttles in this area. I have selected Blue Blaze on many occasions.
We used Blue Blaze for our trip on the Creeper. Very easy to schedule. The van rider there was a little crazy. The driver was flying around the curves with 14 passengers. My only real complaint was that we received no information from them about what to do when we got back. We had to use our phone GPS to get back to Blue Blaze once we got back to Damascus. It would have been nice to have had have had some info on where we needed to go once we got back to town. This was our first time on the Creeper and our first time in Damascus.
We are not avid bikers but this turned out to be the best activity on our vacation. We did the 18 mile downhill ride from Abingdon to Damascus and loved it. The drive to Abingdon was very enjoyable. The gentleman that drove spent the time explaining everything about the area, past and present. The ride was all downhill except for the last three miles which were flat. The only time we pedaled was at the end as we went through town or when we felt guilty about just coasting down the trail. The trail was in great shape, very well maintained. The scenery was incredible. Lots of old train trestles. The trail paralleled and crisscrossed a flowing stream. We set a leisurely pace and it took us about 3 1/2 hours. The bikes we rented were very comfortable and easy to ride. It was very reasonably priced. This is something we would like to do again.
Blue Blaze made everything about our Virginia Creeper Trail experience easy. One member of our group uses a wheelchair and brought his own hand-pedaled bike. We called other rental shops and asked if they could accommodate him; none said no outright, but they were obviously hesitant. Blue Blazes said a definite yes, and made it clear that they'd work with us to meet his needs. And they did - they were super helpful with getting him into and out of their van, and they brought his wheelchair back down to their shop and had it waiting for him when we finished the ride. They were flexible about other things, too, like a last minute cancellation by two of the others in our group. The bikes they provided were great - Trek models that were sturdy but light and easy to ride. The driver who took us to the top of the trail was friendly and gave us lots of info about the sights along the way. Riding the Virginia Creeper was a highlight of our vacation. We'll definitely do it again as soon as possible, and we'll definitely rent from Blue Blaze.
We have used this service three times for bike rental and shuttle and once to just shuttle our bikes up to Whitetop. They run shuttles around every hour all day from Damascus and morning shuttles from Abingdon. Most of their rental bikes are upright comfort models (Specialized, Raleigh, etc. ..) and are well maintained. The shuttles are clean 15 passenger vans with bike trailers. I would recommend reservations around holiday weekends or if you have a large number of people. Excellent service, no issues in four visits.
Staff was great with reservations in advance. They had the bikes that we wanted and were very nice ones. Their shuttle service was very good. We stayed at top of Creeper Trail and they met us there and made sure the bikes were adjusted properly for each of us (10). Took us back to the drop off point and then made sure I knew how to get from there to Abingdon. All were very friendly and helpful.
After an injury ending hike we rented bikes at 2 different outfitters to do the Creeper Trail & the bikes at Blue Blaze were much better! Blue Blaze does a much better job of bike maintenance so the bikes were in much better condition. They also have a location in both Abingdon & Damascus which makes for easy service from either end of the trail. We highly recommend this company! Another HUGE advantage is that they clean the helmets after each use! No one did that at the other shop. We just hung the helmets back on the rack after using them, but at Blue Blaze they had a separate place to put the helmets after they had been used & then they cleaned them. They supply 1 water bottle/trip as do the other rental places. They also had shirts & a few other items for purchase as well as some snacks in case you need those.
