You have not had cheese until you've had Layne's hoop cheese! Love at first bite; merits a return trip every time on the way south. Also, their 13-bean soup is great in any chili recipe. And their country hams are REAL country hams. You will not be disappointed with Layne's.
Friendly staff. Great selection of locally produced items. Got some comb honey, Rapidan River Riesling, apple butter, chow chow and bread and butter pickles. Also some of the absolute best hoop cheese ever. They will ship to you as well. Worth the stop.
Just off of I-81, what a pleasant surprise. The ladies who manage the store are a fabulous help. I purchased sandwiches for lunch, a couple of unique gifts for family and of course jelly, lots of jelly for myself. Family owned store started by "Granddaddy". Had a sample of their Hoop cheese and well just can't wait to be in Virginia again.
Although we only live 40 minutes away, we had never heard of this place. A friend of mine found a brochure, though, so we took a short drive and are glad we did. This place has been in the family since 1954 and is a great little stop along Route 11 or off Interstate 81 south of Lexington. They sell lots of sundry items including potted plants, produce, bulk candy and jams/jellies/pickles, groceries, whole and sliced country hams, deli meats, Wisconsin hoop cheese (mild cheddar), pocket knives, T-shirts and some tourist-trap country items. The hoop cheese was great and they are happy to offer a sample if you ask. They make sandwiches to-order but we just bought some cheese and deli meat to try at home. Oh, and some ham hock pieces as well - I can't wait to make a pot of brown beans with them!I hear that they have some great apple cider in season, so we might have to go back in the Fall. The best part of this place is the family that runs it. They were super-friendly, efficient and made us feel welcome. It's just what a good country store should be.
Steve and his wife are truly part of a vanishing breed of Americana. Their country store has something for everyone. It's a living museum that everyone should experience. From slingshots and hair brushes for bald men to a table piled high with gorgeous country hams this road side stand is pure fun. Steve will walk you through everything you need to know about buying and cooking those hams, his passion is on his sleeve. Please stop if you are anywhere near Lexington VA. Worth a detour.
This place is definitely worth pulling off to. Has Virginia wines, ham, bacon, and cheese. Just to name a few things. A very unique place! A place I hope to return to, soon
If you want some of the best cheese you have ever had in your life, then you need to go to Layne's! They have the old fashioned hoop cheese and it is amazing!! I have been going there for years to get cheese, tomatoes, homemade sausage, and other delicious produce goodies. They also have real country hams and sooooo many other cool products that you can't get any where else. If you are coming through the area or if you live around here, you need to visit Layne's!!! You will not be disappointed, tell Angie that Holley sent you! She is awesome!!
