If you want to see good old American entrepreneurship at work (and have some great beer) you should take a short trip out of the posh-ness of College Station and down the country road to New Republic Brewing and visit with Dean, one of the founders and brew-engineers. Its the real deal without any tourist trappings or stupid prices. These guys are making it happen and growing, so stop by and have some fresh beer, get a mug or a shirt and a picture with the owners cause one day you can say.... "I went there when they were just getting going". And there is a guy next door distilling local Texas whiskey. Hey, its a little off the beaten path so trust your GPS.
College Station finally has a brewery! It's a small one and they refer to themselves as a nano-brewery. But we've finally got a brewery. And the beer is very good! The taproom is open almost every Friday and Saturday 5-9 pm. They're not open when they have to attend special events such as the Texas Craft Beer Festival. Many of the open nights include a food truck and band, however on the nights with no truck or band they offer games and general discussion about beer. You can meet the brewmasters and many of the local homebrewers. It's very hard to find, located in a warehouse near the corner of North Dowling and Hope's Creek in South College Station, not far from the TAMU Fire School. However it's worth the drive for good beer and great company. Families are welcome and many people bring their kids. Friendly, well-behaved dogs are also welcome.
This is not really like other brew experiences as you go to the warehouse on the weekend nights that they are open for tours. Get there early or on time as it is getting more popular. You get a free glass and tokens with admission. Their winter sweet potato beer was a bit cloudy and heavy, but the spring brews are great. Take some food or enjoy the food truck and have a nice picnic on the grounds. They also have local music to entertain. They sell their beers at various establishments, but this is an authentic brewery experience rather than just a pub.
Tasty, hand-crafted beer in small batches. Available on tap at only a few establishments around College Station, but you can take a tour of the brewery, receive a glass to take home and sample a couple of the brews, and talk to the brewmaster. Sometimes there is live music and/or a food truck - check first if that is important to you. Tours are normally offered about once a month. Check the website for news. Y
