Driving to the restaurant on the reservation - Highlawn Pavilion- for dinner we have noticed the large sign for the September 11, 2001 Memorial. This is truly beautiful and peaceful place selected for its high elevation and the New York City Skyline's unobstructed view. The names of the victims lost on that horrific day are memorialized here on The Wall of Honor. I have also visited the 9-11 Memorial in NYC and will say that the Memorial here is just as moving, even if it is presented on a much smaller scale. You can see the symbolic Freedom Tower clearly in the distance - where the Twin Towers once stood. Very moving! Life goes on....

Essex County did a wonderful job with the Memorial in Eagle Rock. The service on September 11 every year is very good but heart breaking. I watched the Twin Towers burn from there and there is an image I can not shake when ever I go. But it is a very nice place to reflect anytime of year and I highly recommend it if you happen to be passing through. The view of New York City is fantastic and at night, if it is clear, all the city lights come to life. All the years growing up it was a very romantic place also. I assume it still is. Haven't been there in many years for a good hug and kiss. Must have a talk with my hubby!

The Exxes County New Jersey Memorial to the 9-11 victims is located in the Orange Mountains, of West Orange New Jersey. Located at the 'top of the Hill', the memorial is set up on the Highlawn Pavilion restaurant location. The drive leading up to the memorial is curved and leads to a medium sized parking aarea. there is a grassy area surrounding the parking area. There is a well defined walk way leading to the WALL OF HONOR.The names of those who perished are listed on the granite wall over looking the Manhattan sky line . There are beautiful bronze scluptures, and mementos at the Memorial location.

This memorial is a very peaceful place to go and reflect. The skyline offers a nice view of NYC and the Freedom Tower where the WWT Center once stood. The names of those lost in this senseless tragedy are listed along the wall...

Eagle Rock Reservation offers many possibilities. We stopped there on a trip to NYC as a place my husband remembered it from childhood- a wonderful place to bike or hike. We did neither but the trails looked very inviting. We were just there to look at the New York cityline before venturing in. We came in as a wedding was taking place- yet the parking was plentiful and it is free. The overlook has been turned into a meaningful memorial with acknowledgements to all who perished that day, including those on the planes. It was a nice break for the kids to get out and stretch their legs as well as look at the city from NJ. The hiking trails seemed well kept and mapped out nicely... and I commend anybody who takes on biking up the hill to the top. If time had permitted I certainly would have welcomed a hike after experiencing the crowds and pace of the city visit. This site could easily have been a short 15 minute break or a day if checking out all that is available.

We were taken to this lovely [reservation] that has a restaurant, picnic grounds and (I am told) a hiking area, although our main reason was to visit the 911 Memorial where many of the people on the New Jersey side witnessed the tragedy of September 11, 2001. It is beautifully done, with a sense of utter respect for all whose lives were affected. It overlooks Manhattan, with a similar border of marble-slab engravings (as the 911 Memorial in Manhattan) with the names of the souls who were lost. It has the sequence of events of that day on cast-iron plaques throughout its gardens. It is worth the visit if you are in the area.
