If you want to see local and regional artists works this is the place to go. The staff are very knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. This is a place, after visiting, you will be motivated to save your dollars to have a wonderful work of art on display in your home or office. Nothing sketchy about his place!!
Poet and children's book author Richard Michelson has an eclectic gallery in the heart of Northampton for art restoration, fine art, framing and children's illustrators. A collection of photographic works by Leonard Nimoy is impressive. The collection of works by noted illustrators of children's books---Mo Willems, Tomis De Paulo, Kadir Nelson, Tony DiTerlizzi, Barry Moser, Maurice Sendak and Jon J Muth to name but a few. True delight for lovers of children's literature and great compliment to a visit to the Eric Carle Museum nearby.
R. Michelson's gallery on main street is located in an old majestic bank. The artists he represents are an eclectic mix...but the group of book illustrators in his stable make up the core of this venue.Who doesn't love the whimsey of Dr.Seuss? Or Tomi DePaula? and then there are the artists whose work you've seen in books before...but didn't realize who they were. The gallery staff is friendly without being intrusive. And it didn't matter whether you were a collector or a voyeur. If you are a collector or someone who wants to feel the magic of childhood, a good book or dream,- Michelson's had prices starting below $100 and heading up into the five digit realm. This was my favorite part of a day trip to Northampton...a good town for art lovers.
I spent many years working in downtown Northampton, and I still live fairly locally but until the other day I had never stepped foot in R. Michelson Galleries. However right now one of their exhibits features the artwork of Mo Willems. It is only there through the end of August so I had to go and go soon! Not only did they have Mo's stuff, but they had many other artists too. There was entire area dedicated to Dr. Seuss and other children's book artists. There was also some beautiful pieces by Leonard Nimoy.I had my 7-year old daughter with me so we focused on the kid-stuff, however from afar I saw that there was a lot there for grown-ups too. It doesn't cost anything to go in and look around. It only costs money if you actually buy something, and yes it is all for sale. So if you want to spend $300 or $3000 you can.If you park in the parking garage behind Thornes and are there for less than 1 hour then your parking will be free. However, if you are like most people you will want to poke around Thornes and the rest of downtown as well. For my trip, since I am a local, I just did the galleries and left and the parking was free.
If you are in Northampton, MA and are walking the main street, step into the R. Michelson Gallery for a delightful break. This gallery, situated inside a majestic bank building, has any number of notable artists to enjoy. The real treat is the large section of illustrator's of children's books. Richard Michelson, owner and author of children's books, has made showing the works of these illustrators a primary focus in his gallery,. The walls in the children's section come alive with works from Dr. Seuss, Tomi dePaola, Mo Williams, Rebecca Guay and many more. The books are also available too. Mr. Michelson is often on site and his staff is friendly and well informed. If you are interested in a piece or an artist, they will devote their attention to your desire. From time to time there are special showings and openings. If you enjoy fine art, especially the art of children's books illustrators, then a trip to this gallery is like visiting a well small, but well appointed, children's museum.
