We were traveling with a group of friends this past summer a total of 4 adults and 4 kids ages 2 through 6. We decided to try Lolas on a whim mostly because of the buck a chuck oyster sign. What an awesome surprise this place was! We had cocktails and oysters on the lawn and the kids could run and play games (we were very early so no one else there). We had dinner inside as soon as dinner was available and it was excellent. We are all from the city and experienced diners and all impressed with the food. This is the only restaurant on MV I have been to where I was impressed with the food.
We had been here last year, when it was called Hooked. The service then was awful and the food just so-so. The former owners of Lola's came back and opened it again with a southern flair. Much more relaxed, and the 4-6 pm Buck A Shuck is still on! We had a wonderful waiter, who actually came back to ask us what kind of vodka we wanted for our martinis (didn't have to as it was advertised to be made with Stoli, but we usually ask for Grey Goose). I had the fish tacos, that were the best I've ever had: nice & crispy, fresh cod with shredded cabbage, pico de gallo & sliced radishes. The only downside was that the sweet potato chips were on the soggy side, but I know from making them at home, it's not easy! It can be noisy in the bar, but can't beat $1 oysters! Can't wait to go back next year.
Try the buck a shuck (oyster or clams) during the happy hour. The oysters are fresh from local oyster farms. The food at the bar or restaurant is delicious and very generous. The shrimp mac and cheese on the bar menu is a must try. It is really tasty with broccoli and bacon added in. Excellent. The mussels were almost too much. Very generous portion with a nice tomato and garlic broth. Homemade corn bread with strawberry butter is definitely fresh made. The service is outstanding and the restaurant is very clean. The owners are in house and keep a tight eye on things. We love this restaurant, great eats and great prices. Service is friendly and efficient. Prices are great for this "island paradise".
I went here recently on a double date with some friends. We had the fried green tomato nachos which were not nachos at all but still delicious. We all ordered off of the special menu. I had a crispy duck with asparagus and their famous garlic mashed potatoes. Portions were huge and everything was so good. I also loved the hurricane to drink which I could have ten of they were so delicious. Summer served in a mason jar. I was also here for mothers day brunch with my family which we used to go to when they were open the first time. It was just as good as I remember. I will absolutely be back here again.
We came here not knowing what to expect after eating in a restaurant in Menemsha that was had a local chef that was full of himself that he serves entrees on bread plates. This place has a great staff (Alexandra) and great food. We ate the ceased salad that was probably the best on the island (yep even better than Atria) served with corn bread. We enjoyed the tacos, mussels, and crawfish. Great place and fun for everyone.
They have returned! After some years away, the proprietors have come back and started right where they left off: lots of great, traditional-yet-imaginative food with friendly service. You cannot go wrong here except by thinking that you can eat more than they can feed you. The appetizers would serve as meals--I could barely get to the second of the three shrimp tacos (wonderful) after splitting the flambeau du jour (a fantastic pizza-like item that cannot be missed...though they change every night). After that (and two helpings of corn bread with strawberry butter), we told the waitress that we were stuffed: "The we win!" she laughed and went to get the dessert menu anyway, announcing: "dessert doesn't count, really." Reading the menu, I can only wish it were true: I will definitely be returning, even if only to eat dessert! I worried all the way home over what I might have missed. Don't miss this place.
This bar is awesome! We had the best night of our entire trip here. The owner is a hoot and the bartender (I think he's the manager as well?) make you feel right at home. I can imagine this place being a blast during the season.
The perfect gathering place. There wll be many regulars here but always welcoming to eeryone. A little New Orleans flair and a quick, fun place to jump off the beach for nice refreshing drink.
I was browsing through the MV page and realized that I've never given a review of Lola's. In fairness to other viewers it's been a couple of years since my last visit. We never skip going especially when we've stayed next door at the Island Inn. We haven't gone the last few times while in MV because we've stayed in Vineyard Haven or Menemsha. I can't say that I'd go out of the way if staying outside of Oak Bluffs. However, it's a must, especially if you're staying in OB, looking for decent soul food, or want to dance, dance, dance. The owners, (not sure if they're still there) were always SUPER friendly. We've been to Lola's at least 3 times, and the food has always been good and the portions were generous. We were dining one night and Angela Bassett and her husband came in for dinner. We were told that Robert Dinero was there the week before. Apparently, it's a popular restaurant with the celebs. The entertainment is usually a DJ, but the music ranges to satisfy all ages. There's also an outside area to sit, smoke, count the stars, etc. This is not a very fancy place, but it's nice for dinner, dancing, and a night of FUN.
Went to Lola's with friends for drinks and dancing. I was surprized by the range in age of the people there (a good thing). This is a place where the young and not so young can have a good time. A must visit while in Oak Bluff for people looking for a fun place to dance the night away.
can not understand why Lola's doesn't have more reviews. Maybe because they closed for a time, last year (2010), was it? Fortunately, the same great people are back managing the place. Great food and drink, not to mention the best music and dancing, on the island. We love Lola's...hope to be back soon...
A little over-priced but the portions are huge. The bowl of gumbo would have been enough food for me w/o ordering an entree. The crowd was great in the lounge and they have very good bands and DJ music.
