About 10 yards down the hill from the garage on left side of road is Robert Frost Grave. Read his poetry before you come and then just look around. In October, this is one of Vermont's most beautiful spots.
Wow...this cemetery has beautiful grounds and is well taken care for....Robert Frost is buried here. Make the stop!!
The cemetery is a beautiful setting, enhanced by the changing colours of the leaves of the giant trees. We found the memorial to the British troops who died while prisoners after the Battle of Bennington, gravestones of those who had fought them, and the grave of Robert Frost, America's Poet Laureate,
It is a profound feeling to be surrounded by such history...many Revolutionary War soldiers are buried here. The cemetery has beautiful views of the landscape. The many varied stones and grave sites are fascinating.
It's a cemetery if it's not attached to a church. This one is next to and behind the Old First Church, therefore, technically, it's a graveyard and a lovely one at that. There's something very elegant about the tombstones all lined up and slowly wearing away. It's on Monument Avenue which has some of the most gorgeous houses and leads up to the Bennington Battle Monument. A great chance to enjoy all that Old Bennington has to offer.
I enjoyed this cemetery very much. It is well kept and easy to explore. The sound of birds chirping and the beautiful landscaping makes it an enjoyable place to visit.
The graveyard is extremely fascinating, and I could have spent a good part of my afternoon here. it was amazing to see the old headstones, the family names, and the history of the area. I came to specifically see Robert Frost's grave. As other reviewers have noted, it is much easier to reach his grave by parking near the church and entering the cemetery there.Robert Frost's site was beautiful, but so was the rest of the cemetery. Even after seeing his resting place, I took some time to peruse the other headstones and soak up some history.
Take note, this part of the cemetery is best accessed from the church, not the museum. The cemetery is a peaceful and historic place to visit. There is a brochure posted but it's difficult to read. The oldest headstone I noted was from the early 1700's. Many are inscripted with lengthy epitaphs. Sadly, many are illegible now due to the forces of nature. The artful stones are fascinating and fun to see. Carved with cherub faces, weeping willow trees and other art forms of the past they are lovely.Robert Frost had an interesting visitor when we were at his grave site. After a few minutes a dark gray cat came running to his stone. It rubbed and caressed it like a long lost friend. We all stayed for a while and looked up some of Frost's poems enjoying them grave side. The cat stayed as long as we did and disappeared (not kidding) from the cemetery.
It probably helps that Robert Frost is buried here as the entire cemetery is very well manicured. There are some very old headstones that make for interesting reading if you are into that sort of thing. We missed the church as it was closed. Check out the three covered bridges and Bennington Monument while you are in the area. A very nice way to spend the day.
I like the fact is it always kept nice,They say no fake flowers but I have seen some but not too bad.I have family layed to rest here
The church rising above the cemetery is picture perfect, but in its shadow is this cemetery. I could have spent the entire day here reading the headstones. This is a place filled with history. The cemetery is apparently treasured by the town because it is in perfect, manicured condition. From the front white picket fence the oldest headstones can be seen. It is a beautiful place to take pictures. There are signs along the path pointing the way to Robert Frost's grave in the back of the graveyard. This is a peaceful way to see some history in a quiet setting. It is well worth the stop.
grave of Robert Frost. Behind Bennington Museum which is a nice small museum with a collection of Grandma Moses. Cemetery sits next to quintessential New England church in Old Bennington which is a great place to drive around for the lovely old home and of course the Bennington Battle Monument
