I realize the water level is down about 20 feet, but the garbage (diapers, bottles, plates) that were all around is just gross. I'd heard great things about Canyon Lake, but I saw nothing good about it.
Another good place to visit close to the water for swimming. The rocks are a little challenging to climb down to get close to the water so be careful! However...it is very fun once you get down. :)
If you come here bring everything you need because there are not many tables or places to set up for the day. Get there early and you may find a shady area or get one of the covered tables. Restroom facilities are not good.
LOTS of people!!! We enjoyed our company that was with us but be prepared to be tube to tube with others!!
CanyonLake is beautiful but this park was very dirty. Trash everywhere and nowhere to set up by the lake that was clean. You can jump off the rocks in to the lake but otherwise you have to climb down to get to the water
surrounded by $100,000 homes and lodges I was so disappointed at how filthy the whole park was. It's not considered a state park but that's no excuse with the amount of entrance fees they collect I figured they would have a clean up crew. how sad, never will I go again!
With $4 entry fee, you would expect some trash pick up at the park. It is the dirtiest park I have seen. The Saturday we were there it was packed with people as well as trash on the ground. The restroom was dirtier than a portable potty. There were dirty diaper on the floor in one stall and unflushed toilet in another. The whole place was gross!
This is the worst corps of engineering park I have ever been too. the park was covered in more trash than there was grass and the swimming area was just a bunch of old clothes and trash. you would think after the lake being down for years now they would extend the swimming area out to where the water is. right now the "swimming area" is rocks and dirt. I will never be back there. Someone could make a fortune if they opened a real beach on Canyon Lake and kept it up.
This large park does not have camping but has 2 boat launches, docks for your guest to easy transfer to and from the boat, large live oak groves for shade, small "islands" to explore and a sand bottom swim beach with pontoons and ropes to keep the kids out of the way of boats and jet skis. This park is accessible from Startzville and is only open in the summer months. Not recommended on a holiday weekend as the locals and nearby San Antonio residents fill it up.
This past weekend we rented a boat on canyon lake for a few hours. LOVED the lake and had a blast. Once done, we wanted more water time so we decided to stop in at Canyon Beach Park. BAD IDEA! It is the most disgusting, dirty, trashy area I have seen. We were kicking pesticide bottles off the path to the water, the beach was covered in all kinds of trash, including dirty diapers. It reeked of poop on the beach :-x You didn't want to take your shoes off and walk anywhere. I didn't feel like it was a sanitary place for my two young daughters to be, whether in or out of the water. We left immediately. If you're looking for a nice, clean, family friendly place to hang out- DON'T GO THERE!!!!!
The "beach" was absolutely disgusting. Covered with trash, dirty diapers, glass, etc. This was the one area that was shallow enough for children to swim in, all other areas have a sharp drop off (signs posted). Don't waste your time.
Canyon Lake is beautiful, one of our favorite lakes to visit. However, this park is horrible. We got there pretty early on a Sunday. The "beach" area was trashed. Diapers, beer cans, glass, it was everywhere. We probably filled up a trash bag of other peoples garbage, just to make the area around us safe. We ran into a couple nice people, others were just rude and did not watch their kids. We ended up leaving earlier than expected due to a couple unattended kids, about 10 years old, throwing rocks and being very disrespectful around us. Where were their parents? Oh, just minding their own business about 200 yards away. Bathrooms were disgusting and should not even be used. It's cheap, $4 per vehicle to get in, however, I would take the $4 elsewhere. Maybe just the crowd that choses to use the park and treat it like badly...Won't go there again. Much better places on Canyon Lake.
We were initially excited by seeing the photos on TA .ofcourse park is scenic and nicely shaded. Worst part is their restrooms which are NOT even restrooms at all. WORST maintenance and ofcourse the crowd should also be faulted for keeping the park clean. Beach area is dirty with Rocks and everyone of us would NEVER visit this park. Lake somerville, Lake georgetown are far better compared to this park.
Great little lakeside park. Boat ramp, diving area with underwater sea caves. Not much in the way of facilities but a nice place for locals to enjoy a picn, fish in the lake or scuba dive.
This park is very large and WHEN the water level is up enough, many people launch their boats there. One should check to see if the ramps are open before deciding on this park and the others around the lake. Drought conditions frequently cause ramp closures. The swim beach is often out of the water (roped often area to avoid jet skiers, etc when the lake level is up). Okay, now for the good part: the parking is ample and the oak trees are majestic. There are good spots to hold a bbq and a playground for the kids. Many people fish off of the penninsula but beware that the right side is shallow and the left side (as you walk out from the parking area) is DEEP! Several people have drowned in the lake over the years so swimmers beware. It is however a fun landbased park and can be nice for water enthusiasts based on lake level and one's skills.
